What is a U-Value?
In simple terms, a U-value measures the rate of heat transfer through a structure (such as a wall, roof, or window) divided by the difference in temperature across that structure. It is expressed in units of W/m²K (Watts per square metre Kelvin).
The U-value tells you how much heat energy escapes through one square metre of the window for every degree of temperature difference between the inside and the outside. The crucial rule to remember is: The lower the U-value, the better the window is at retaining heat.
How is a Window's U-Value Calculated?
A window is a composite structure made of glass, spacers, and frames. A complete window's overall U-value (written as Uw) is calculated by combining three distinct measurements:
- Ug (U-value of the Glass): Measures heat loss through the center of the double or triple-glazed glass unit. Glass coatings (like Low-E metal oxide films) and gas fills (like Argon) lower this value.
- Uf (U-value of the Frame): Measures heat loss through the frame material (uPVC, aluminium, or wood). Multi-chambered uPVC profiles or thermally-broken aluminium frames reduce this value.
- ?g (Linear Thermal Transmittance of the Spacer Bar): Measures heat loss through the perimeter edge of the glass unit where the panes meet. Modern "warm-edge" plastic spacers conduct far less heat than old metal spacer bars.
Always make sure you look at the Uw (overall window U-value) rather than just the Ug (glass U-value) when comparing quotes. Some sales brochures show the glass-only value to make their products seem more insulating than they actually are when framed.
