The Site Problems We Solve (That Other Fitters Gloss Over)

Sticking glass to a wall sounds straightforward until you are standing on site with a spirit level. Commercial walls are rarely plumb, rarely flat, and rarely what the drawings promised. Here is what we actually deal with and how we handle it:

• Walls That Bow, Lean, or Run Out of Square: Glass is rigid. If the wall behind it is not flat, the glass will not sit flush. We shim and adjust the setting plane behind the glass, engineering precise bottom offsets so the front face reads flat, plumb, and true across the full run. This is bread-and-butter work for our crews.
• Laser-Set Grid Lines for Multi-Panel Layouts: On large installations with multiple panels side by side or stacked, we set digital multi-laser datum grids to maintain consistent 2-3mm expansion joints across every panel. No eyeballing. No "near enough."
• Adhesive That Will Not Destroy the Paint: Standard acetoxy silicone releases acetic acid as it cures. That acid eats through back-painted coatings and causes permanent dark streaks or paint delamination. We exclusively use tested non-reactive polymer adhesives (Colorspray LMF Clear) approved by glass manufacturers for back-painted applications.
• Heavy Glass in Tight Spaces: A single 10mm toughened glass sheet can weigh 25kg per square metre. Manoeuvring panels through live restaurant kitchens, narrow retail stockrooms, or occupied hotel corridors requires material lifts (Genie lifts), spider suction frames, and manual vacuum lifters. Not two blokes trying to wing it.
• Cut-Outs for Sockets and Services: Real-world walls have socket boxes, extraction ducts, light switches, pipe runs, and structural heads. All cut-outs are CNC-machined at the factory to our site measurements before the glass is toughened. We do not cut glass on site. Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after processing. We template every position on site first, then order the glass with factory-machined cut-outs to exact dimensions.

Common Questions From Clients

Q: I am fitting out a restaurant. Can you install glass panels on walls that are not straight?
Yes. This is one of the most common situations we deal with. Restaurant and bar walls, especially in older buildings, bow, lean, and run out of plumb. Glass cannot bend to match. We shim behind the panels and adjust the setting plane so the finished face is flat and aligned within 2-3mm trade tolerances. Your customers will not see the wall behind it. They will see a clean, flat glass surface.

Q: Why does silicone sometimes ruin back-painted glass?
Because most general-purpose silicones are acetoxy-cure. They release acetic acid as they set, and that acid chemically attacks the paint on the back of the glass. You end up with permanent dark streaks, bubbling, or full delamination. We only use non-reactive neutral-cure sealants (Colorspray LMF Clear) that are specifically formulated for back-painted glass. This is not optional. It is the difference between a wall that looks right in five years and one that looks wrecked in six months.

Q: Can you just install glass panels that we have already ordered from another supplier?
Yes. We regularly work as labour-only glazier subcontractors. We inspect client-supplied glass when it arrives, handle logistics within the site, mount panels using proper setting blocks and structural adhesives, and carry out all joint sealing. If there is a factory defect, we flag it before it goes on the wall, not after.

Q: How do you handle cut-outs for sockets, pipes, and extraction vents?
We do not cut glass on site. Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after it has been processed. Instead, we template on site first. Our fitter measures every socket box, pipe centre, and duct position. Those measurements go to the glass manufacturer, who CNC-machines the cut-outs into each panel before it is toughened. Accuracy at the templating stage is everything. We have done this on hundreds of panels and know what tolerances to build in.

Q: What is the difference between glass wall panels and a kitchen splashback?
Scale and specification. A domestic kitchen splashback is typically a single panel behind a hob. Glass wall panels cover entire walls, often floor to ceiling, running metres wide, with multiple panels butt-jointed together. The glass is thicker (usually 8mm or 10mm versus 6mm for a small splashback), the adhesive system is more demanding, and the alignment tolerances are tighter because any error is visible across a long run.

Q: Can you match a specific brand colour, such as Farrow & Ball, RAL, or Pantone?
Yes. Back-painted glass can be colour-matched to any RAL number, Pantone reference, Dulux code, or Farrow & Ball shade. The paint is applied to the reverse face of the glass at the factory, then the glass is toughened. We work with glass processors who handle custom colour matching as standard.
