Understanding Fire Door Safety Ratings

Fire doors are life-saving safety systems. They stop fire, heat, and toxic smoke from spreading between compartments in a building. They protect escape routes and give occupants time to evacuate. Commercial landlords, block managers, and business owners have a strict legal duty under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to install and maintain compliant fire doors.

Fire doors are tested to BS 476-22 (British Standard) or BS EN 1634-1 (European Standard). The rating indicates how many minutes the door resists fire:

FD30 Fire Doorsets (30-Minute Resistance)

FD30 fire doors provide a minimum of 30 minutes of fire integrity. They are the most common fire door specification in residential buildings. FD30 doorsets are required for:

  • Intumescent strips are recessed into grooves cut into the door leaf edge or frame rebate
  • At temperatures above 150°C, the intumescent material expands up to 25 times its original volume
  • This expansion seals the gaps between the door and frame, blocking fire and heat transfer
  • Combined with cold smoke seals (neoprene or brush-type), they also block toxic smoke at ambient temperatures before the fire reaches the door

Seal positioning:

  • FD30 doors: 15mm × 4mm intumescent strip on three edges (both stiles and head). Threshold seal optional.
  • FD60 doors: 20mm × 4mm intumescent strip on three edges plus combined smoke seal. Threshold seal required where specified.

Certified Frame-to-Wall Gap Sealing

The gap between the door frame and the surrounding wall structure must be correctly filled to maintain fire integrity. Our fire door installer teams seal this gap using:

  • Intumescent mastic sealant for gaps up to 5mm
  • Intumescent foam for gaps between 5mm and 10mm
